Important Tips for Travelers in Australia During a Cyclone

  • Travelers in the cyclone area are urged to stay calm, follow the advice of authorities and treat the cyclone threat as extremely serious.
  • Police typically  set up a hotlines for those evacuating and relocating out of the path of the cyclone.
  • Be sure to register your details on the Red Cross’ National Registration and Inquiry System (NRIS) system online at http://www.redcross.org.au or by telephone on 1300 993 191 for callers in Australia or by written forms at nominated evacuation centers.
  • International enquiries for the NRIS can be made at + 61 7 3055 6220.
  • Warning information is available through TV and radio broadcasts and via the Bureau of Meteorology website at www.bom.gov.au or by calling 1300 659 212 (for callers in Australia).
  • For cyclone preparedness and safety advice, visit Queensland’s Disaster Management Services website www.disaster.qld.gov.au.
  • Triple zero (000) should only be called for life threatening situations. Triple zero is their equivalent of our 911 in the US.
  • If you are traveling with a travel company be sure to notify them and any insurance provider who is covering your trip.
  • Be sure to keep all important documentation such as passports, airline tickets, confirmation vouchers on you at all times.
